It’s an age old custom.  You request a service, and you pay: parts, and labor.
"Of course you pay for parts.  You’re paying for the good you need." 

"Of course you pay for labor.  You pay for the service performed to
either install, repair, or replace the good you bought."  

The price of the part is simple.  You purchase a tangible
object for an agreed upon price.  

But what about the labor?  How is that price determined?  And why are so many different companies’ formulas for determining this price so different? Why is this so arbitrary?  And why do I feel so uncertain about what I'm charged for labor……?

So let's get rid of the uncertainty by eliminating that labor charge.
